ELG: Towards the Primary Platform for Language Technologies in Europe

Support the Multilingual Digital Single Market

ELG will strengthen the commercial European Language Technology landscape by establishing a pan-European marketplace.

Offering powerful multilingual, cross-lingual and monolingual technologies, ELG will contribute to the emergence of a truly connected, language-crossing Multilingual Digital Single Market. We will create a digital marketplace on which European companies can showcase and offer their Language Technologies to customers. The ELG will also provide technologies to the European citizen, public administrations and NGOs.

Grow a vibrant community and help coordinate all European LT activities

ELG will become the primary platform for the Language Technology community in Europe.

ELG is an initiative for the European LT community, including industry, innovation and research. It can only be successful if a large community makes active use of the platform and contributes data sets and services. We are growing a vibrant community by collaborating with all related projects and initiatives, issuing open calls and establishing 32 National Competence Centres.

Create a powerful and scalable LT platform using a grid architecture

ELG’s novel technological approach enables innovations and synergies between commercial and non-commercial LT providers, buyers and users.

ELG designs, develops and deploys a unique LT platform, based on the principle of encapsulating services in containers. This approach tackles and solves the notorious issue of interoperability. By applying virtualisation to LT services, ELG enables commercial and academic providers to deposit their running services in, and to deploy them through the grid.

Thousands of data sets

The ELG will offer the largest collection of data sets and language resources. Users will be able to search for and download data sets, corpora, language models and source code. The whole community is invited to share their resources through the ELG, making them available using different licensing and access models, depending on their needs.

Hundreds of LT services

The ELG will provide running LT services that can be tested and deployed directly through the grid – from machine translation to named entity recognition and summarisation, from basic linguistic processing to sentiment analysis and dependency parsing. The ELG will provide tools for spoken language, including speech recognition and synthesis. We will support various European languages and enable providers to share their services with potential customers.

The yellow pages for European LT

ELG intends to become the proverbial yellow pages for the European Language Technology landscape. Our goal is to list all relevant stakeholders from research, innovation and technology. Stakeholders will be able to register themselves in the ELG's freely accessible catalogue, ensuring vastly increased reach and visibility. Users will be able to filter and search for organisations, domains, sectors, regions, countries, languages, service types, data sets and more.

Scalable LT grid

ELG will be the first large-scale Language Technology platform applying containerisation through Kubernetes. All required components and libraries can be included in a single container, ensuring that the service will operate as foreseen by its developer. The powerful ELG infrastructure will be able to receive, manage and run many images in parallel.

National competence centres

ELG set up 32 National Competence Centres to establish a strong European network. They act as regional bridges to the project. The NCCs support ELG in collecting regional information about companies, research centres, resources, services and projects. They organise regional ELG workshops and promote ELG in their area and establish bridges to funding agencies.

Open calls for pilot projects

ELG will organise two open calls for pilot projects, verifying the platform’s usefulness and broadening ELG’s spectrum of technologies. The pilot projects will develop missing services for languages underrepresented in the ELG.
