Goal of the project: Integrate translation quality estimates into the user interface. Further improvements to translation speed on consumer-grade hardware. Open API that allows web developers to build their own applications using the Bergamot MT engine. Provide efficient, high-quality translation models for translation of German, French, Spanish, Polish, Czech, and Estonian into and out of English.
Project abstract: The Bergamot project provides browser-based, client-side machine translation (MT) in Mozilla Firefox. Running MT directly on the users’ machines instead of translating in the cloud empowers them to preserve their privacy and increases the uptake of language technologies in Europe in various sectors that require confidentiality. Free software integrated with Mozilla Firefox will enable bottom-up adoption by non-experts, resulting in cost savings for private and public sector users who would otherwise procure translation or operate monolingually. In addition to in-bound translation, Bergamot also offers outbound translation, helping users to produce text in foreign languages, for example for filling in forms on web sites without exposing their information to third parties.
