Successful ELG kick-off meeting at DFKI

On 22/23 January 2019, the kick-off meeting of the new EU project European Language Grid took place at DFKI in Berlin. The aim of the project is to develop the first – and primary – platform for European Language Technologies, which, in the medium to long term, is meant to turn into the most important digital marketplace for language technology solutions in Europe.

In addition to a business directory of companies, universities, research centres and independent experts, the platform will also contain a repository of thousands of data sets as well as hundreds of functional services that can be used directly from the grid. These include machine translation for all major language pairs, speech recognition and synthesis, named entity recognition, parsing and many more.

The project consortium consists of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI, Germany), the Institute for Language and Speech Processing (ILSP, Greece), University of Sheffield (United Kingdom), Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic), ELDA (France), TILDE (Latvia), SAIL LABS Technology (Austria), Expert System (Spain) and the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom). ELG started on 1 January 2019 and has a runtime of three years.
